“What now?” asked Eldridge, looking down at the remains of the bastards who’d tried to hurt Salvo. He seemed regretful; Gunnison could understand that. You made your own family out here in the black. Other feds must feel like family to Eldridge.

Gunnison, however, didn’t feel one ounce of regret. Not one gram of it.

“We’re on phase three,” Gunnison reminded him. “And hey—we don’t even have to steal a ship. Pasiphae’s right here, isn’t she? It’s all coming together.”

Regency cocked her head. “Blondie, did that cyclops hit you upside the head? We can’t leave in your ship.”

“Why not?” demanded Gunnison.

Salvo sniffed. “Because we’ll never get away in time. If they haven’t got her bugged by now, we’ll still be leaving Ilium in a ship that’s under warrant. Everyone will be after us. They’re putting it out there that we nulled Kri. Every fed in the quadrant and every bounty hunter will be on the lookout for her. For us.”

“So what do we do?” demanded Gunnison. “Just leave her? Pick another ship at random and try to make our getaway?”

“What are you not understanding?” Regency snapped. “We’re down here. They’re after us. They’ll blow us to bits before we make it out of the gravitational field.”

Eldridge nodded. “She’s right.”

Gunnison stamped his foot. “That’s all well and good, but we can’t stay here. I don’t see anyone else suggesting anything, although you all seem pretty quick to tell me that my ideas won’t work. So? What do we do?”

Salvo bit her lip. “Any chance we could take Grey head-on?”

“No way,” said Regency. “Trust me. And we need a way off this station that Grey won’t see coming.”

“He’s got the feds working for him now,” argued Salvo. “There’s no way for us to slip away without being seen.”

Gunnison held up one hand. “Wait. What if we can make it so that they stop watching the feeds?”

“Why wouldn’t they be?” asked Regency. “They must know you wasted their cyclops. Even if Grey isn’t watching us now, he’s got people on it.”

Gunnison turned to Salvo. He didn’t need to convince all three of them; as long as she agreed with his plan, it was fine by him. “Listen. One of the Phoebus’ crew came to my quarters. He got nulled, and they thought I was dead. It gave me enough time to get away.”

Salvo frowned. “You think we should play dead? How?”

“Grey won’t believe we’re out of the way unless he sees us die with his own eyes, right?”

Salvo nodded cautiously.

“So they have to kill us.” Gunnison held out his hands. “They have to knock us right out of the black.”

“Great plan,” said Regency sarcastically. “We’ll all die. It’s the perfect getaway.”

“That’s not what he means,” said Salvo. “Gunn, are you sure?”

“Do you have a better idea?” Gunnison asked softly. “Because I’d love another option, honestly.”

He and Salvo both glanced toward the Pasiphae. Salvo practically lived on board; Gunnison had built her from the guts out. He’d gotten shot on that ship. He’d been reborn in the building of her.
